Hatch Final 4: Cockadoodle, Gabriel Hall, Sister Pie, Third Wave Music

After a week of public voting online and at sites around Detroit, these entrepreneurs are announced Friday as finalists in the fourth annual Hatch Detroit contest:

  • Cockadoodle: A breakfast and lunch concept planned for the Avenue of Fashion (Livernois). "Rise, shine dine" is its slogan. See menu here.
  • Gabriel Hall: A planned live entertainment bar and restaurant in the Woodbridge neighborhood with a New Orleans theme and Cajun menu.
  • Sister Pie: A bakery at 4750 Woodward with pies, cookies, breads and breakfast pastries.
  • Third Wave Music: (Owner Jen David is at right above) A planned shop in the Forest ARms building with new and used music instruments, lessons and repairs.

The winner, to be announced next Wednesday night at Ford Field, gets a $50,000 startup grant from Comerica Bank, the main sponsor. The vote leader also receives legal services, advertising, accounting and IT support.

The winner will be determined by public votes here (allowed once daily) and judges' decisions after finalists make presentations at a Hatch-Off event emceed by former WDET host Craig Fahle. 

The 2013 winner, Batch Brewing Co., still is preparing to open on Porter Street in Corktown. If it doesn't do so by Oct. 1, the prize money is forfeited.

These six semi-finalists remain eligible for support from the Detroit Lions, a contest partner: ! DELETE 4 !

  • Algeria Pops will make paletas (Mexican ice pops) incorporating fresh, whole fruits and other ingredients such as chili and tamarind.
  • Bumbo’s aims to be "a true working class neighborhood bar" with a fenced-in back patio.
  • McClary Bros. Outpost aims to be a pop tasting room, store and bottling facility in Corktown serving fountain sodas made from drinking vinegars otherwise known as “Shrub Sodas.”​
  • Rocco’s Italian Deli hopes by offering high quality meats, cheeses, vegetables and herbs to add to Midtown’s food options and bolster its ethnic diversity.
  • Uncle Bug’s Organic Creamery, an artisinal ice cream maker, envisions a retail shop and wholesale distributor.
  • 1701 Bespoke is a group of clothiers that plan to providing designer custom suits, shirts and coats for men.


How to vote: One vote can be cast each day here until Aug.20 at noon.
