Flood victims in Metro Detroit are learning the hard way how careful you have to be when taking out home insurance. Some realized they didn't have flood insurance. In some instances, when folks did, they were told it didn't cover this flood because it was sewer back up.

But there's still some hope.

Gov. Rick Snyder on Monday issued some advice to flood victims: Meticulously document your losses.

Jim Lynch of the Detroit News reports that Snyder, in town Monday, toured Warren with Mayor James Fouts, and gave that advice to Metro Detroiters in preparation for Michigan's official request for federal disaster assistance.

On Thursday, Snyder declared Metro Detroit a disaster area. There may be hope for some victims to get some compensation one way or another.

“The biggest thing we need to do is get all of the information together for a presidential (disaster) declaration,” Snyder said. That declaration would make millions in federal aid available to Michigan residents trying to get back on their feet after last week’s devastation.

The News reported that Snyder said the document info may also help in the state's attempt to force insurance companies to pay claims when it's appropriate. -- Allan Lengel
