Detroit Cops Bust Five Taggers Decorating Building On Livernois

August 18, 2014, 2:20 PM

Detroit police from the 10th Precinct nabbed five graffiti taggers Thursday as they spray-painted designs on Murdock's Tire Doctor on Livernois and Burlingame on the city's west side.

According to a department news release, three of the taggers attempted to flee in a minivan after one of the precinct's neighborhood police officers surprised them while they worked. A police supervisor stopped the vehicle, and saw three others painting another side of the building. They fled on foot, but cops caught two of them in an adjoining neighborhood.

The five have been charged with malicious destruction of property over $1,000, a felony. There was no information on their hometowns or ages.

Graffiti is rampant in Detroit, and the arrests of three suburban girls earlier this summer has received widespread coverage, partly because they were caught with assistance of Dan Gilbert's downtown workforce, and partly because, before the teens were arrested and charged, Gilbert called the perpetrators "degenerates."

In its statement Monday, the police said "the department will not tolerate individuals who maliciously deface or vandalize any buildings or structures within our city..."

Mayor Mike Duggan conducted an anti-graffiti campaign a decade ago when he served as Wayne County prosecutor, but the current prosecutor, Kym Worthy, has not made graffiti a priority, citing budget cuts that force her office to concentrate on violent crimes.
