Beyond Midtown: Northwest Detroit Also Has an Emerging Food Scene

August 20, 2014, 8:55 AM

News flash from Larry Gabriel at Metro Times: "There’s a Detroit neighborhood with a new restaurant and three more slated to open, far from Midtown."

Livernois near Seven Mile, known as the Avenue of Fashion in brighter days, "may soon become the avenue of eateries." the columnist writes.

After decades of downturn, things are beginning to look better around there, with new businesses popping up over the past few years and more under development. . . .

Eateries are the key element in the mix that will draw people. There are already five restaurants or businesses that serve food between Seven Mile and Eight Mile Roads, but there need to be a lot more to create a critical mass.

Kim Tandy, a district manager at Detroit's Department of Neighborhoods, tells Gabriel about three restaurants planned along Livernois:

  • Kurzo's Chicken and Waffles
  • Regal Café
  • The Old Hunter Supper Club, being renovated for retail and residential use

The columnist also speaks with April Anderson, co-owner of Good Cakes and Bakes, a startup at 19363 Livernois:

"People don't know the great things taking place here," says Anderson. "Everybody thinks about the developments downtown, Midtown and in the New Center area. I love being located here.

"I grew up near Livernois and West Warren but we used to come here and shop. So I knew the history of the area. I knew I wanted to be in a space over here."

The northwest side strip near Sherwood Gardens and Palmer Woods, Gabriel notes, has "several of the city's most stable neighborhoods clustered together. There is a residential base that Midtown developers can only dream about."
