Novi Judge Quits Before State Hearing

Veteran Novi District Judge Dennis Powers, who has been accused of obtaining thousands of dollars in unearned expenses and pay, and of tardiness and excessive absence, has announced he'll retire on Sept. 1, the Detroit News reports.

Mike Martindale of The Detroit News reports that Powers,72, who had been on the bench for 16 years, will retire one month before he faced a disciplinary hearing before the state Judicial Tenure Commission.

The complaint before the tenure commission included allegations that he received  thousands of dollars in mileage reimbursements he filed while attending real estate classes, parties and golf outings, the News wrote.  Powers is also accused of excessive tardiness and absences from the bench and misuse of county property.
