Video: GM's Mary Barra Gets Soaked For You-Know-What Challenge

August 22, 2014, 3:14 PM

It was inevitable. After all, even Hillary Clinton and Andrea Mitchell got the wet head treatment as part of the unstoppable ALS Ice Bucket Challenge fundraiser, so how could GM's chief executive be left out?

Mary Barra feels a late August summer chill.

Mary Barra on Friday accepted a challenge from HP CEO Meg Whitman, Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann and strangers on Twitter. She graciously let two brave underlings each douse her with a bucket as a corporate communications team member videotaped the stunt.

The automaker says Barra donated undisclosed amounts to the ALS Association and CharityWater.org.

In turn, she challenges Dan Gilbert, NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon and Phebe Novakovic, the CEO of General Dynamics, to step up and get soaked.

Behind all the self-promotion is a real benefit for medical research. Paulina Firozi of USA Today has an update:

As of Thursday, the ALS Association raised $41.8 million dollars, compared with $2.1 million during the same period last year.

The fundraising total has increased more than $25 million this week. The association has nearly 740,000 new donors.
