Mayor Mike Duggan Wants A Developer to Save Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center

August 28, 2014, 2:04 PM

The storied Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center in the Brush Park neighborhood, which appeared destined for the wrecking ball just weeks ago, has gotten a reprieve.

Mayor Mike Duggan, at a press conference Thursday, said the city was looking for a developer to do something with the property where boxing legend Joe Louis trained and many others came for recreation. Last month, the city said the building would be razed barring a last minute interest from developers, the Motor CIty Muckraker reports.

Steve Neavling of the Motor City Muckraker reports that Duggan said that reputable investors have expressed interest in developing the art deco building that was left abandoned eight years ago while Kwame Kilpatrick was mayor.

Neaving writes:

Duggan said the building must go or be redeveloped soon because of surging interest in the Brush Park area following news this summer that construction will soon begin on a $650 building project to build a Red Wings arena and Entertainment district by mid-2017 on the other side of Woodward.

“If it were me and I were looking at all the people moving in the Eastern Market and I were looking at what the folks in Brush Park were doing, I would be looking at a restaurant, retail, something that will serve the growing community but is based on a theme of what went on in this building and in this neighborhood,” Duggan said, according to the Free Press.
