Poll Shows Gary Peters Widening Lead, Governor's Race Very Tight

September 10, 2014, 6:22 AM

The attack ads in both the governor and senate races have reached a feverish pitch in Michigan with the election less than two months away.

How that will change the results on Nov. 4 is hard to say.

But for now, the latest Detroit News/WDIV poll shows Gov. Rick Snyder with less than a 2-percentage-point lead over Democratic challenger Mark Schauer, and Rep. Gary Peters widening his lead against Republican opponent Terri Lynn Land. Peters has a 10.5 percentage lead over Land,  That's up 7.4 percent since May.

Chad Livengood of the Detroit News writes that the Detroit News-WDIV (Local 4) poll shows Snyder leading Schauer 43.6 percent to 41.8 percent, which is within the margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Schauer gained seven percentage points since The News last surveyed the governor’s race in late May, Livengood writes.

Livengood writes:

According to the poll, Schauer leads 35 percent to 31 percent among independent voters. Snyder’s campaign hoped to get a boost among independents Tuesday after winning the endorsement of former Gov. William Milliken, a moderate Republican who has supported Democrats before.

The News reports that the statewide survey of 600 likely voters also found Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette narrowly leading his Democratic challenger, Mark Totten, by two percentage points. -- Allan Lengel
