Rep. Kerry Bentivolio May Try to Hurt David Trott With Write-in Campaign

Now this could get very interesting.

U.S. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio, a one-term congressman who lost his re-election bid in the Republican primary to well-heeled Farmington Hills attorney David Trott by nearly a 2-1 margin, may try to sabotage Trott's election in November by waging an official write-in campaign, according to a Detroit Free Press report.

The paper cites an interview by Bentivolio on MIRS' Monday weekly podcast == which has been played more than 131,000 times. It's available here, including to nonsubscribers of the Michigan Information and Research Service newsletter.

Bentivolio figures a write-in campaign would take away Republican votes and help Trott's Democratic opponent.

In an email to the Free Press, Bentivolio writes:

“Everywhere I went here at home or in D.C. I had a Trott tracker working for a self-serving, self-absorbed entitled bully. Now they want unity?”

In the interview MIRS, he said he was frustrated by by the loss and money spent by Trott, who runs a law firm that specializes in home foreclosures for financial institutions.

Trott is running against Democratic candidate Bobby McKenzie, a former U.S. State Department employee also opposed by Bentivolio.

He and his family will write in his name, tjhe congressman says, he hasn't decided if he'll officially launch a write-in campaign.

The Freep writes:

“I have to weigh, really, what am I doing here,” he said, noting that as a write-in candidate, he could likely only expect to get 5% of the vote — which could have the effect of delivering the election to McKenzie.

“I don’t know if I really want to do that,” he said.
