Macomb County Board of Commissioners

Despite a split vote, the Macomb County Board of Commission dragged the county into the 21st Century on Thursday, and approved a gay-rights policy preventing discrimination of the LGBT community in the county government workplace.

Chad Selweski of the Macomb Daily reports that the commission voted 8-5 vote for the so-called human rights policy that prevents firings, pay disparities, or denied promotions among the 2,600 county workers based on sexual orientation.

The board, did however, delay approval of another part of the policy that would have appllied to contractors doing business with the county, the paper reported.

You have to wonder how in these modern times anyone could oppose such a policy. But they did.

The Detroit News reported that Macomb Township resident Nicki Brandenburg of Macomb Township said neither the county nor the board has received complaints about discrimination and called the policy a “waste of time.”

“To the commissioners ... who opposed this ordinance: Thank you very much,” Brandenburg said, according to the News. “And for the others who haven’t, I guess there is some recourse and we will see that recourse in November.”
