In instances like this, it really does seem like Detroit should be named "Gilbert Town" or "Gilbertville."

Sherri Welch of Crain's Detroit Business reports that work is slated to begin this week on the widening of the I-375 exit ramp to Lafayette Street that will be funded by Dan Gilbert. It appears that it's not an act of benevolence, but rather a good business move.

The work is expected to help alleviate bottlenecking at the exit, which leads to Greektown and the Greektown Casino, which is owned by Gilbert's Rock Ventures, Crain's reports.

Crain's reports that the Michigan Department of Transportation has signed off on the $1.25 million plan.

The Lafayette exit "is a popular access to downtown, and right now it's constrained," Jennifer Kulczycki, vice president of communications for Rock Ventures, told Crain's.
