Update: Pedestrian Bridge Falls on Southfield Freeway; 1 Dead

Update, Friday, 8:06 a.m. --  The trucker who hit the bridge has died, The Detroit News reports.

"We received a call at about 6 a.m. that some type of waste hauler had hit the pedestrian overpass with its boom up," Michigan Department of Transportation spokeswoman Diane Cross told the News.  "It struck the overpass and knocked out the entire structure. No one was on the overpass or driving beneath it at the time. The driver has been taken to a local hospital."

Friday, 12:39 p.m. -- The Detroit News reports that MDOT says the freeway will reopen sometime today.

A pedestrian overpass bridge collapsed on the Southfield Freeway at Cathedral Road Friday morning, halting traffic in both directions for miles,  WXYZ reports. At least one person was injured.

The stations reports that initial indications are that a semi truck waste-hauler hit the bridge and the driver may be trapped. Fox 2 reported that the driver of the car-hauler  was taken away on a stretcher.   

The Southfield is closed from I-96 to Joy Road, the station reports.

The station reports that those stuck in traffic included Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who was on his way to practice. The station reported that Detroit Lions security picked him up.
