September 29, 2014, 5:20 PM

Update --  Monday, 5:05 p.m.:  Police on Monday were questioning a 52-year-old homeowner who shot and killed a man suspected of trying to break in his home in the 8400 block of Whitaker in Southwest Detroit.

Sgt. Michael Woody, a Detroit Police spokesman, told Deadline Detroit that the incident took place around 7:15 a.m., and the shooting victim, 34, was shot and killed in the backyard as he allegedly tried to break in the home.

Police can't confirm initial media reports that the homeowner shot the man after he saw him choking his bulldog in the backyard, Woody says.

The man might have been trying to lift the dog over the fence so he could continue trying to break in, the sergeant adds.
