Cops Beef Up Patrols Around Henry Ford High After Tuesday 'Gang Violence'

October 01, 2014, 6:02 AM

Police plan to pay extra attention to the area around Henry Ford High School in northwest Detroit Wednesday after 14 Ford students were detained by police Tuesday after fights broke out at the school.

Ann Zaniewski reports in the Free Press that Detroit Public Schools police officers arrested four students who were 17 or older and detained 10 others who were juveniles.

Mario Morrow, spokesman for the Education Achievement Authority school district, said the juveniles were taken to the police department, ticketed and released to their parents.

There were no reports of serious injuries. Morrow said no weapons were used.

It's unclear what sparked the fighting. The district issued a statement saying there were "several incidents of student-on-student violence that appear to have been a carryover from neighborhood disputes over the weekend." The EAA's interim chancellor, Veronica Conforme, referenced gang violence in a statement sent to the Free Press.
