Mayor Duggan And Detroit Police Union Agree To New Contract

October 02, 2014, 7:34 AM

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan just gained control of the Detroit Police Department, but he has already negotiated a new contract with the Detroit Police Officers Association, Jim Kiertzner and Jeff Vaughn report on WXYZ-TV.

Officers will be getting a pay raise, and residents will soon see a larger police presence on the streets.

DPOA President Mark Diaz says the pact came so quickly after Duggan assumed control of the DPD  because of the mayor was more flexible than Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr.

The terms total a 15.5% pay raise over 5 years for officers with 8.5% of that total received during the first year, plus a signing bonus.

Detroit Police officers' pay was cut by 10% in 2012 and has been frozen since.
