In a surprise move, Detroit City Council member Saunteel Jenkins announced her resignation Friday. She will become the CEO of The Heat and Warmth Fund (Thaw), a nonprofit that helps people needing utility assistance.

Her resignation becomes effective Nov. 10, a press release says.

"My entire professional career has been dedicated to serving vulnerable populations and improving the quality of life for all," she said in a statement. "THAW provides a rare opportunity to continue that work with Detroiters, and families all over Michigan at a time of great need."

Prior to becoming a council member in 2010, Jenkins served as director of the residential treatment program at Mariners Inn, a shelter and treatment center for men dealing with homelessness and drug addiction. She has also worked as a social worker, helping troubled youth and adults turn around their lives, her bio says.

Last year, THAW distributed nearly $25 million to 26,000 Michigan households, according to its website.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan issued a statement on her resignation:

“Councilmember Jenkins has been a friend and a great partner in the city's turnaround through her support of our new public lighting and blight removal strategies, as well as the creation of the new Great Lakes Regional Water Authority. I know she will do a great job over at THAW where she will continue her service to our community. We look forward to working with Saunteel in her new capacity and continuing our partnership with City Council.”
