DPS Turning Over 77 Properties to City of Detroit

October 29, 2014, 7:41 AM

Some sad, picked-apart remnants of the Detroit Public School system are going to be turned over to the city.

The school system will turn over  57 vacant schools and 20 vacant lots to the city, Ronnie Dahl reports at WXYZ. In exchange, the city will forgive $11.6 million of school district debt, primarily for electric bills.

Mayor Mike Duggan says that 26 percent of the buildings are open, unsecured and dangerous. Many of the buildings will be demolished, WXYZ says.

Duggan said he expects 14 to 16 of the vacant schools to be used in the future.

The proposed deal goes to the city council and school board.
