An interesting political race has been unfolding in Macomb County.

An election for a Macomb County Circuit Court judgeship is pitting an assistant county prosecutor against a lawyer whose father currently holds the judgeship.

Jameson Cook of The Macomb Daily reports that James Maceroni, 40, a private attorney from  St. Clair Shores, is seeking the seat that will be vacated Jan. 1 by Peter J. Maceroni, who is retiring.

His opponent is Assistant Prosecutor Steve Fox, 37, of Macomb Township, who heads a cold case squad.

Both are raising substantial amounts for aggressive campaigns, the paper says.

Maceroni is playing up his 15 years of experience in a variety of areas of the law. , including criminal defense, juvenile, general civil and family law.

Fox says he has a wide variety of experiences, and cites the four years of practicing labor, business and employment law at a Detroit firm before becoming a prosecutor nine years ago.

Steve Fox

Fox, also deputy chief of the senior protection unit, has prosecuted murderers and many other capital offenders.

It hasn't always been friendly.

The paper writes:

A chart released by Fox on his website and in literature, which uses check marks to display 14 differences between the two candidates, drew a heated response from Maceroni. Fox boasts his law enforcement background by pointing out, “Criminals put behind bars 1,000,” while Maceroni has helped convict zero.

Maceroni called “reprehensible” Fox’s comparison of their convictions record.

“To disparage me for swearing to uphold the Constitution of the United States and defending people accused of committing a crime is reprehensible,” he said. “Everybody has a role to play, and without that, we would not have a criminal justice system.”
