Update: Friday, 2:30 p.m. -- University of Michigan president Mark Schlissel announced Friday at a press conference that he had accepted the resignation of athletic director Dave Brandon. Jim Hackett will fill his shoe in the interim.

In a press conference that was live-streamed on the website of the Michigan Daily, Schlissel said:

"This morning, I accepted the resignation of athletic director David Brandon. Dave feels that it would be in the best interest of our student-athletes, the athletic department and the university community if he moved on to other challenges and allowed the important work of the department and the university to continue without daily distractions.

"I agree with his decision."

Earlier article, noon Friday:

It probably hasn't helped that the University of Michigan football team sucks. And of course, the program has been embroiled its share of controversy.

That being said, it may not be all that surprising that Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon is resigning and will not return next year,  a source tells ESPN's Brett McMurphy.

The university will hold a news conference Friday at 1:30 p.m.

The biggest controversy of late involved the team's mishandling of quarterback Shane Morris' head injury and issues with students' ticket prices.

A Michigan spokesman told ESPN.com the school had "nothing else to add."
