Can money make a difference?

Some donors certainly hope so.

Paul Egan and Todd Spangler of the Detroit Free Press report that last-minute campaign funds are pouring into the campaigns of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder and Democratic challenger Mark Schauer in a race that polls show is at a statistical dead heat.

The two campaigns collectovely have taken in just under $1 million in the past week, the paper says.

Snyder has taken in $436,000 from 250 donors in the past week, as opposed to Schauer, who  has received about $530,000 from 237 donors.

Though no campaign turns money away, large sums received in the last week of a political campaign can be difficult to spend effectively, says political consultant T.J. Bucholz, president of Vanguard Public Affairs in Lansing.

"It's difficult to add to your TV buy and it's too late to do mail," said Bucholz, who worked on former Gov. Jennifer Granholm's 2006 campaign.
