Rabbi Killed in Terrorist Attack in Israel Spent Early Years in Oak Park

The terrorist attack at a synagogue in Jerusalem on Tuesday that claimed five lives hit close to home here in Metro Detroit.

One victim, 43-year-old Rabbi Aryeh Kupinsky, spent his early childhood in Oak Park, and his family was a member of what is today Young Israel of Oak Park, one of the biggest Orthodox Jewish congregations in Michigan, the Free Press reports.

Michael Zwick, a boyhood friend, says the family moved to Israel when Kupinsky was in elementary school, according to the paper.

"It was a terrible thing to hear," Zwick is quoted as saying.

An Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, says five people were killed and several others wounded by two assailants, who were killed on the spot. A police officer was among the five slain Israelis.
