Hollywood has been quietly filming in Detroit the past couple weeks for a film called "Destined." There's been virtually no hype about the movie locally.

It's the story of 13-year-old Rasheed Smith, who is at a crossroads and has to decide whether to take a path of good or pursue a life of crime.

Directed and written by Qasim Basir, the movie shows parallel stories of the good and bad outcomes for the teen. In one, he becomes an architect and in the other a drug lord.

That structure has performers filling two roles, says actor Jason Dohring 32, who plays a cop In the story of one path and an architect in the other.

Other actors in the film include Margot Bingham of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire"; Jesse Metcalf, who played John Rowland on "Desperate Housewives"; Mo McRae, who is in "Sons of Anarchy and Survivor's Remorse";  and "Corey Hardrict," who has been on such TV shows as "Return of the Living Dead."

Detroit cop Ira Todd, who was a consultant for the TV shows "Detroit 187" and "Low Winter Sun" and the new "Beverly Hills Cop 4" movie,  is a consultant for some actors in "Destined."

Dohring, who is from Los Angeles, says some of the filming has taken place in run down neighborhoods and in places like office buildings.

He said he'd never been to Detroit before and was a little blown away at first by the scale of empty structures.

"It was a bit shocking at first," he said. "I had never seen abandonment on such a big scale. It’s pretty wild.  But I think the people have been really wonderful. When I first got here I was impressed by how they behaved toward me."

He has dined at Slows Bar BQ and Lou's Deli and Prime 29 in West Bloomfield.
