In the Holiday Spirit? This Should Help

November 20, 2014, 5:29 PM

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling of Christmas

Right now, a week before Thanksgiving, it's still too early for seasonal overload, for bah-humbugging, for clicking off the carols.

In that spirit, those who enjoy downtown festivities, a cheerful crowd and a nostalgic ceremony will jam Campus Martius Park and nearby sidewalks for Friday's 11th annual Detroit tree lighting around 7:45 p.m.

Tie-in activities and entertainment start at 5 p.m. Performers include singer Jena Irene of Farmington Hills, an "American Idol" runner-up last May, two choirs, rock-blues singer Laith Al-Saadi of Ann Arbor, opera singer Corey Roberts, a folk group called the Corktown Popes and others.

Three local groups will present skating performances, as will Olympic gold medalist, Katia Gordeeva of Russia.

Radio host Greg Gnyp of 93.9 The River spins at an ice rink party from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.

Food and beverage vendors will be in a heated tent at the park, with free hot chocolate from DTE Energy and free cinnamon rolls from Ikea.

Carriage rides start on Monroe Street for $10.

The event's social media tag is #DetroitTreeLighting.
