Ilitch Firm Asks For Delay In Arena Vote After Council Suggests Zoning Changes

November 26, 2014, 6:16 AM

The Ilitch-owned developer of the new Red Wings hockey arena Tuesday asked the Detroit City Council to hold off on voting on a crucial zoning request to enable construction of the arena in the Cass Corridor, Joe Guillen reports in the Free Press.

Olympia Development of Michigan's request to delay the vote followed a council committee meeting this morning where a handful of amendments to the zoning request were suggested. One amendment aimed to preserve the historic Hotel Park Avenue. Another suggested changes to the parking deck attached to the arena.

Councilwoman Raquel Castaneda-Lopez said the council's willingness to honor the developer's request rather than vote on the changes "shows council's commitment to wanting to see the project be successful and accommodating."

A representative of Olympia at today's meeting declined to comment. A spokesman for the company said a statement would be forthcoming.

Tuesday's meeting was the council's last scheduled session of the year. The delay means the zoning request likely won't be voted on until January. Olympia has not said the delay will affect the timeline for building the arena, according to Castaneda-Lopez.
