December 09, 2014, 3:06 PM

The Detroit Police Department is getting more 21st Century.

CBS Detroit reports the Detroit Police Department launched a new app Tuesday that will help connect the department to smart phone users.

CBS reports that the app, which was developed by Detroit Labs, provides information about the city and departments, allows tips to be submitted anonymously through the app and contact numbers for precincts, bureaus and other departments.

To download the app, search for "DPD Connect" in the appropriate app store.

"Our biggest hope is that we'll be able to connect with our community," police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody told Deadline Detroit. "Often times we've missed out on the opportunity to really engage them and we're hoping to be able to bridge those gaps with technology."
