Voters Will Decide Whether to Pay Higher Sales Tax For Better Roads

If you want better roads, you may have to pay for it at the cash register.

Paul Egan and Kathleen Gray of the Detroit Free Press report that Michigan voters will be asked in May to approve increasing the state sales tax from 6% to 7% to raise $1.2 billion a year to fix Michigan's crumbling roads and bridges.

Gov. Rick Snyder and lawmakers from both parties announced the deal Thursday.A two-thirds vote in the Senate and House is needed to get the issue on the May 2015 ballot. A vote on that is expected later Thursday.
