January 27, 2015, 12:18 PM

A lot gets written about trendy new restaurants and bars in Detroit, such as HopCat and Selden Standard.

Now, the website Hell Yeah Detroit! gives shouts to "11 Great Detroit Restaurants to Try That Are Not New." The list:

  • Polish Village Cafe in Hamtramck
  • Red Hots Coney Island, Highland Park
  • Giovannis, Detroit
  • Jacoby's, Detroit
  • El Nacimiento, Detroit
  • Cadieux Cafe, Detroit
  • Capers Steakhouse, Detroit
  • Dakota Inn Rathskeller. Detroit
  • Scotty Simpsons Fish and Chips, Detroit
  • The Turkey Grill, Detroit
  • Polish Yacht Club/Ivanhoe Cafe, Detroit

Here's a sampling of what Rusty Young writes:

El Nacimiento, 400 Vernor Highway

The great Mexican food in Detroit doesn’t stop at Mexican Village, that is where it begins. If you head further into the Springwells neighborhood, on Vernor, you will come across another area peppered with restaurants. In our opinion the best is El Nacimiento. If you want authentic food at unbeatable prices this is it, and the atmosphere is great. The owner Rodrigo Padilla opened the doors in 2001, it is named after the town he grew up in. You can’t miss him in his big white cowboy hat.

Capers Steakhouse, 14726 Gratiot Ave.

Capers Steakhouse has been serving up steaks since 1982. They do it a little bit different though, they sell their steaks by the ounce. You can order whatever size steak you wish, and the price varies with the market. The offer Delmonico, New York Strip, T-Bone and Filet. They also have made-to-order baked potatoes that can hit lunch pail sized proportions if you are not careful.
