Birmingham real estate developer Jeffrey Surnow, a bicyclist enthusiast, died Sunday after being struck by a police officer while riding his bicycle in South Kohala, Hawaii, the website Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield reports.

Kevin Elliott of the Downtown Birmingham/Bloomfield website writes that the Hawaii Police Department said Surnow, 63, of West Bloomfield, was riding a bicycle early Sunday morning when he was struck by a police vehicle driving in the same direction.

Authorities arrested the officer, Jody Buddenmeyer, 30, on suspicion of negligent homicide, the website reported. He was released pending further investigation and placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

The website writes:

Surnow was the owner of a development and management business, The Surnow Company, which he started in 1978. The company is known locally for redeveloping the former post office building at 320 Martin Street in downtown Birmingham, where the Surnow located his offices. Other projects include the redevelopment of the former Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education building, at 550 Merrill Street. Most recently, Surnow purchased the David Wachler & Sons Jewelers building, at 100 S. Old Woodward.

Details for the funeral services are pending, according to the Ira Kaufman Chapel website.
