The Detroit Tigers rank 13th on the Forbes list of major league baseball team valuations.
Forbes magazine pegged the Tigers worth at $1.125 billion, up from $680 million last year. Mike Ilitch bought the team in 1992 for $82 million. The Tigers are one of 15 major league baseball teams worth at least $1 billion.
Forbes put the Tigers' revenues at $254 million and operating income at minus-$20.7 million.
The Yankees were ranked #1 at $3.2 billion, followed by the LA Dodgers at $2.4 billion and the Boston Red Sox at $2.1 billion.
Forbes writes about the Tigers:
The Tigers posted baseball's second-highest average local television rating in 2014, registering a 7.62 on Fox Sports Detroit. But there are signs Detroit's fans are getting restless with the team's inability to close out their streak of four consecutive playoff appearances without a World Series title.
FS Detroit's ratings were down 21% versus 2013, and attendance at Comerica Park fell 5.4%. With free agent hurler Max Scherzer signing with the Nationals and slugger Miguel Cabrera coming off ankle surgery, the current Tigers may be running out of time.
