April 13, 2015, 4:06 AM

Comedian Jay Leno, a renowned car buff, is clearly bullish on the Detroit auto industry, saying it's at the forefront of a new golden age,  thanks to a new wave of new high-quality performance vehicles mixed with fuel-efficient technology, The Detroit News reports.

“It’s like the ’60s again, but with cars that can actually stop and go around corners,” Leno said in an interview in Detroit on Sunday, according to Michael Martinez of the Detroit News. “It’s pretty amazing. I never thought we’d see street cars with 600-700 horsepower. It’s fun to see the Detroit manufacturers competing equally with Europeans.”

Martinez writes that Leno was in town Sunday to attend the Shell Eco-Marathon competition at Cobo Center, where 1,000 high school and college students raced custom-made vehicles that used everything from carbon fiber bodies to electric engines to achieve thousands of miles per gallon

The News writes that Leno is filming a new show for CNBC called  called “Jay Leno’s Garage," which will include interviews with the mechanics who work on the presidential limo, a behind-the-scenes look at the General Motors Co. Heritage Center and a piece on the Shell Eco-Marathon. The program is already a popular online show.
