New Detroit Art Journals Pop Up

April 15, 2015, 7:59 AM

From Detroit's art scene comes a series of new art journals.

A "small explosion" of journals have surfaced in the past year or two, Michael Hodges writes in The Detroit News.

"It's like mushrooms after a rain," Royal Oak artist Mary Fortuna, who edited the mid-1990s journal Ground Up, tells the News. "I am delighted by the breadth and variety, and the something-for-everyone quality."

Hodges writes that the newer journals include Detroit Research, Infinite Mile, Essay'd, The Periphery, Detroit Art Review, and ZIPR.

"A lot of people are talking about Detroit's potential for becoming a new artistic hub," Dick Goody, an Oakland University art professor who's director of the university's art gallery, tells the News. "So I think this runs parallel to that."

It should be noted that it can be a challenge to sustain such publications, and some only publish two or three editions before folding.
