Detroit Police shot and seriously wounded a 64-year-old man Wednesday afternoon when he refused to drop a knife and lunged at a firefighter,  authorities said. The firefighter was not stabbed.

Firefighters had come to the house in the 4100 block of Euclid on the west side to check his well-being, authorities said.

Authorities said the incident began around 2 p.m. after the man's daughter had called police to check on her father's well being. The father, authorities said, has some mental health issues, and hadn't answered his daughter's calls for three weeks.

Police called the fire department to force open the door and assist, if necessary.

When police and firefighters entered the home, the man started yelling for everyone to leave. He then charged at a firefighter with a knife.

Officers shot him twice,  authorities say. The firefighter suffered bruises, but was not stabbed.
