Here's sweet news from the corner of Kercheval and Parker on Detroit's near east side:

Twenty pies bake simultaneously in a new Blodgett commercial oven at Sister Pie, which opened this morning and promptly attracted a line of patrons.

The bakery-coffeshop debut comes eight months after entrepreneur Lisa Ludwinski, now 31, won $50,000 in the fourth annual Hatch Detroit contest for business start-ups. She added nearly $26,600 more in February from an Indiegogo drive.

Ludwinski, who graduated from Mercy High School in Farmington Hills ('02) and Kalamazoo College ('06), had operated from shared space space in Midtown to create pies, cookies, breads, muffins and other pastries sold online, at three retailers and at booths at pop-up events.

Her new 900-square-foot shop in the West Village neighborhood is an "airy black-and-white bakery," Sylvia Rector writes in the Freep, with "a large L-shaped counter, . . . seating at a communal table and small side tables, and standing high-tops."

It's open from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., six days a week. "We will serve breakfast and lunch – ranging from breakfast galettes, buckwheat porridge, and savory scones made with organic eggs to vegetable-packed whole grain salads and sandwiches," Ludwinski said in this year's Indiegogo pitch. Coffee is brewed from beans bought from Populace Coffee, a Bay City micro-roaster.

The menu through May includes rhubarb pie, Ludwinski posts Friday morning on Facebook.

Eater Detroit has 19 photos of the charming shop in a 1920s building. Editor Brenna Houck writes:

The bakery features many personal touches including a glass case contributed by Ludwinski's grandmother and mugs donated by friends, family and the surrounding community.

The interior design is by architect Kaija E Wuollet of Laavu Studio, which also created the look at Gold Cash Gold and Detroit Institute of Bagels, both in Corktown.

On Kercheval, the young baker's excitement about her milestone is clear in this tweet:
