Things just keep getting tighter for Wayne County government, an entity former County Executive Robert Ficano left behind in dire financial straights.

Charlie Ramirez of The Detroit News reports that Wayne County Executive Warren Evans, who took office in January, unveiled a painful "recovery plan" Monday to save $230 million over four years to help close a $70 million a year deficit.

One major proposal, bound to generate plenty controversy, calls for the elimination of health care coverage for future retirees, the News reports.

"The county is in a very dire financial situation," Evans warned.

Things really do look bad.

The News reports that county's pension fund is less than 50 percent funded and needs $910 million to become fully funded.

"This is our best proposal," Evans said. "I understand some people won't like it. Either it gets fixed now or an emergency manager will fix it."
