Running a golf range on Belle Isle has had its challenges.

Francine Pegues, the new owner of the Belle Isle Golf Range, has had a goal of bringing the game of golf to a new audience -- an underserved population, particularly children, Crain's Detroit Business reports. But it's costing much more than she and the state anticipated.

Pegues signed a three-year contract with the state to operate the facility.

Bill Shea of Crain’s Detroit Business reports that Pegues, who is also the president of the Michigan Women’s Golf Association, has already spent $45,000 of her own money on the golf center for things like golf equipment, lawn maintenance and approximately 12,000 golf balls.

And there have been other challenges operating the facility, Crain's reports, including disruptive power outages, grounds-keeping issues and water supply problems.
