Michigan first lady Sue Snyder is seldom heard taking on big issues in the state.

Now comes this.

Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley writes that the governor's wife is calling on college leaders across Michigan to a statewide gathering June 8 --  Let's End Campus Sexual Assault Summit -- to develop ways to end campus sexual assaults by encouraging more victims to report the crime, changing the culture that leads authorities to dismiss allegations and developing uniform programs, policies and punishments.

"We need to make Michigan a leader in ending these sexual assaults because it's been going on too long," Snyder told the Freep.

Riley reports that Snyder has met with at least 20 public university leaders as well as the heads of the state's private and independent colleges, and they've all pledged to attend the summit.

"We've got to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to come up with a solution as well as encourage collaboration and bipartisan efforts to identify best practices. We're going to draft some action plans to implement these things in the coming year."
