Two Berkley Middle Schoolers Create 'Hit List' Naming Staff and Students

How serious were these students? School officials and police aren't taking chances.

Berkley School District administrators removed two Anderson Middle School students from class and they were detained by police after the school found the students created a "hit list" naming staff and students, Jonathan Carlson of WXYZ reports.

The list was discovered inside a notebook and given to principal Michael Ross last Friday by another student, according to the station. The notebook also had sketches of the school. It is unclear if the students will be criminally charged, WXYZ says.

The school superintendent sent a note to parents:

I’m writing to you today to share some news concerning a situation which occurred at Anderson Middle School (AMS) last Friday.

On Friday morning, an AMS student brought a fellow student’s notebook to Principal Michael Ross, which contained some very troubling information. Included in this notebook was a list of AMS students and staff that the student was upset with. It also contained a plan to potentially harm these students and staff. AMS administration immediately removed two students from class who were involved and contacted Berkley Public Safety who responded within minutes.

The students who made the threats have been removed from school and have been detained by police. The parents of every student listed were contacted by Berkley Public Safety and every staff member listed was also notified. The Berkley School District will continue to work with Berkley Public Safety. We appreciate their quick response and collaboration.

We applaud the student who brought the notebook to an adult’s attention. As you know, we take student safety very seriously in the Berkley Schools, and encourage all children to contact an adult if they ever have reason to be fearful or become suspicious of anything in school. We hope you’ll take this opportunity to remind your children to speak up when something doesn’t seem right.

Thank you for entrusting us with your children every day.
