In many circles, for many months, people have speculated that Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan would run for governor in 2018. Some political observers insisted it was a certainty.

But Duggan was asked again Wednesday evening by journalist Carol Cain during a question-and-answer session at the Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy Conference about his interest in the 2018 race.

"I will not be a candidate for governor in 2018," Duggan said, according to Chad Livengood of the Detroit News. "I will not be a candidate. Don't ask me again."

Of course, there's nothing binding to keep Duggan from changing his mind.

But clearly Duggan seemed pretty adamant, ending speculation, at least for now. Duggan took office  as mayor in 2013.

Gov. Rick Snyder can't run for re-election in 2018 because of term limits.

There had been talk of Snyder making a bid for president, but he ended that speculation by saying he won't compete in the 2016 election.

Speculation has it that he would like a cabinet post.

His chances would be far greater of getting that with a Republican.

But some Democrats have reached across the political aisle before and appointed a Republican to show some bi-partisanship.
