Detroit Bubble Tea Ready to Open on Woodward in Ferndale

May 28, 2015, 8:06 AM

After last August's belligerent floods in Metro Detroit delayed the opening, Detroit Bubble Tea is set to open Saturday on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Eater Detroit reports.

Brenna Houck of Eater Detroit reports:

"It's  been a bumpy road to opening for Detroit Bubble Tea, co-owner Arun Prasad tells Eater. He and wife Alicia Prasad were initially prepared to open last fall, when August floods rushed through Ferndale and washed away all their plans. "I had done the entire build-out," says Arun. "The floors weren't properly insulated and the floods came and started pouring through." Arun says it was a huge hit both to their timeline and financials as the café wasn't fully insured. He estimates they lost approximately $45,000 in materials.

Eater Detroit reports that the shop will feature bubble tea and such treats as macarons and vegan cupcakes. It also has plans to partner with The Crepe  in Royal Oak.

Wikipedia describes bubble tea this way:

Bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea, is a Taiwanese tea-based drink invented in Taichung in the 1980s. Most bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed/shaken with fruit or milk, to which chewy tapioca balls and/or fruit jellies are often added.
