T-Baby in new of "It's So Cold in the D."
Detroit Rapper "T-Baby" had mixed results when she released her song "It's So Cold in the D" in 2008.
It went viral and flipped from an Internet joke to somewhat of a city anthem, notes Adam Graham of The Detroit News. Usher sang it at the Fillmore Detroit a few years ago, and Z-Trip opened his set with it at the Movement festival in 2009.
It also became e target of ridicule, including a parody video from Beavis and Butt-Head (see second video below) that asks. "Is this 'Real Housewives of Detroit?' "
Critics mock its low-budget visuals, grammatically challenged flow and off-key rapping.
The News writes:
For T-Baby, however, the jokes were difficult to bear. She had to stop reading the comments attached to the clip, which were hurtful to her, and eventually she stopped going on YouTube altogether. Her phone number was posted online, and she was flooded with rude text messages and threats on her voicemail. An extreme introvert by nature, the negativity caused her to retreat further into her shell.
"I didn't have no support, nobody to support me or help me with it or nothing," says T-Baby seated in a booth at Universal Coney Island on Detroit's east side.
Nearly two weeks ago she posted a slicker five-minute version on YouTube (below) that she hopes will boost her career.It has been played 20,500 times as of Tuesday night, compared to 8.2 million for the original.
