Bye Bye Joba Chamberlain

July 03, 2015, 3:50 PM

Tigers reliever Joba Chamberlain had some bright spots this year, as well as last, but his bad games washed away any of his accomplishments.

On Wednesday, he gave up three homers in the same inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates, eliminating any real chance for the Tigers to win that game. You could see the pain on his face, and the writing by then was pretty much on the wall.

Now, it's bye-bye Chamberlain, who came to Tigers with a mountain-man look and cleaned it up a little this year with a funky haircut and a trimmed beard.

On Friday, the Tigers announced that  Chamberlain and Tom Gorzelanny were being designated for assignment, which means they can be picked by another team or head down to Toledo.

The Tigers on Friday also reactivated Alex Avila from the disabled list.

The Detroit Free Press writes:

After one appearance with Triple-A Toledo, Jeff Ferrell is poised to make his major league debut tonight. And after being converted to a relief role early this season, Drew VerHagen will join the Tigers from Double-A Erie for tonight's game against the Toronto Blue Jays (7 p.m., FSD).

They will take the spots of Chamberlain and Gorzelanny in the team's bullpen.
