A 3-year-old boy was shot and killed on Detroit's east side Monday by an 11-year-old boy, WDIV reports.

WDIV's Mara MacDonald reported that they were not related, and that Elijah Walker, 3, of Taylor,  and his mother were visiting a home in the 16000 block of Eastwood Avenue near Kelly Road.

The victim was shot in the face while they played with a handgun, WDIV reports.

“The 11-year-old’s father was at the house. He apparently showed them the gun,” Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt tells The Detroit News.

"The (children) were in the rear of the family home," another assistant chief, Lashinda Stair, says. "We're not clear on exactly what happened right now, but the 3-year-old was shot in the area of the head. The mother placed the call to 911."

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses.
