Dr. Wayne Dyer, a Detroit native, author and motivational guru whose lectures were often aired on PBS during fundraising drives, has died. He was 75.

"Wayne has left his body, passing away through the night," his family wrote on his Facebook page. "He always said he couldn't wait for this next adventure to begin and had no fear of dying. Our hearts are broken, but we smile to think of how much our scurvy elephant will enjoy the other side. We Love You Forever Dad/Wayne. The Dyer Family"

Dyer died Saturday night in Maui, Hawaii,  Reid Tracy, chief executive of Dyer's publisher, Hay House, said, according to NBC News. The cause of death wasn't immediately reported, but he had been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in 2009.

He was a a Detroit Denby High and Wayne State University graduate, and went on to eventually live in Hawaii.

He was sometimes described as a self-help pioneer.

He had many fans as was evident from comments on his Facebook page.

Anna Gaspari wrote on his Facebook page:

Dr Dyer was one and will continue to be one of my greatest teachers in life! He has helped me understand my spiritual path just a bit more and today this world lost a great human but his spirit and legacy will live on with me forever! God bless Dr Wayne Dyer!
