Yes, the 'Dead' Dude in Detroit Front Yard Is Only a Dummy

October 09, 2015, 1:05 PM

In a city that records a few hundred murders a year it's not far-fetched to stumble upon a dead man on someone's lawn.

So it's not that surprising that people have taken Larethia Haddon's little Halloween prank seriously.

She tells The Detroit News that wherever she has lived for the past 25 years, she puts out a stuffed dummy that looks like a dead man each October.  She does it to get laughs.

She put it out Tuesday on Mendota Avenue, near McNichols and the Lodge Freeway on Detroit's west side, and police showed up three times, she tells The News and other media. On Wednesday, police came two or three times, Candice Williams and Mark Hicks of The News report. EMS has also showed up, as her son Kendrick Hardaway posted on Facebook with the photos above. (We shared them Wednesday on our page there, getting 271 "like" clicks and more than 20 comments.

The News reports that officers were called Thursday, but by then they had figured it out.

“I used to live in Redford Township, and oh God — the police department, fire department, they would come out every day,” Haddon, 57, said Thursday night. “Everywhere I’ve ever lived, it’s always been this way. But this year, for some reason, it’s getting a lot of attention.”

She tells WXYZ  that she tells authorities about the prank, but  police still come.
