Video: A Brief Chat With a Detroit Barber Who's in the New Batman Movie

February 09, 2016, 10:43 PM by  Allan Lengel

Detroit barber shop owner Thomas Fentress is a gentleman with a genuine smile that grows wider -- almost from ear-to-ear -- when you ask him about his role, albeit a very abbreviated one, in the upcoming "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," starring Ben Affleck.

Fentress says he has no lines in the film. He cuts an actor's hair, though he's not sure who the actor is. (He says it was not Ben Affleck).  Nonetheless, he's thrilled to be part of the production of the film that premieres on March 25.

Fentress has owned the Dexter Barber Shop in Detroit for 53 years. He started at Dexter and Chicago. About 40 years ago, he moved the shop to its current spot at 13806 Puritan on the city's northwest side.

The neighborhood has changed over the decades. A lot of the stores are vacant. But people still come around for haircuts and some lively discussions -- even from the suburbs like Farmington Hills.

Deadline Detroit's Allan Lengel recently visited the shop to talk to Fentress about the movie, the neighborhood and what he thinks about some Detroit mayors like Mike Duggan, Coleman Young and Kwame Kilpatrick.
