New Emergency Manager Steven Rhodes is getting a taste of the frustration Detroit Public Schools teachers are feeling.

The Detroit Federation of Teachers, the union representing more than 2,600 teachers, is calling for a district-wide sick-out on Monday, Keith Matheny of the Detroit Free Press reports:

The action, announced at a hastily called press conference this afternoon, comes after DPS Emergency Manager Judge Steven Rhodes announced to the union Saturday that without a dramatic infusion of cash from the state, Detroit Public Schools will all but shut down after June 30, leaving teachers without paychecks and students without summer school or extended special education services.

Teachers said they were assured that the $48.7 million in a bill signed by Gov. Rick Snyder last month to fund DPS through June 30 would also cover summer pay for the approximately two-thirds of district teachers who signed up for pay deferred to make it year-round, versus only the school year. Rhodes' indication Saturday that such summer pay would also run dry at the end of June led to today's announcement.

"The district’s promises are no longer worth the paper that they are printed on," Terrence Martin, executive vice president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, said today.
