Most diners generally are skittish about eating unusual foods. Not many go for fried, breaded lamb brains, and it's likely even fewer would order insects if they were on the menu.

Freep food critic Mark Kurlyandchik writes:

Insects have been on restaurant menus from London to L.A. for years, but the trend is just about to descend on the city: a Detroit-based cricket farm start-up will host an insect-centric pop-up dinner Thursday to kick off Eating Insects Detroit, a three-day conference focusing on insects as food at Wayne State University — the first event of its kind in the U.S.

Accompanying the story is a video of staffers eating roasted crickets. Their comments include:

  • "These are like eating potato chips."
  • "LIke eating a sunflower."
  • "Tastes like a burnt Rice Krispie."
  • "Earthy."
