Downtown Detroit development continues.

The latest: An extended-stay hotel will open in the Metropolitan building at 33 John R, which has stood empty since the late 1970s, writes Louis Aguilar of the Detroit News. The ground floor of the hotel will be designated for retail outlets.

The 110-room, Element Detroit Hotel, is slated to open in July 2018, the developers said in a press release, according to Aguilar.

Element Hotels are part of the larger chain Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.
