Downtown Detroit's Latest Woodward Debut: Kit and Ace

Kit and Ace, a luxury, Vancouver-based "athleisure" apparel company for women and men that sells machine-washable "technical cashmere" clothing and accessories, is the latest fashion entry on Woodward Avenue in downtown Detroit.

The store sells simple, casual basics like tees, tanks, dresses and pants for men and women.

It opened Wednesday and will operate seven days a week.

The 3,337-square-foot shop at 1459 Woodward is on a stretch of blocks that not so long ago were lined with boarded-up storefronts. Now, the blocks include such apparel stores as the Nike Community Store, John Varvatos and Moosejaw.

Kit and Ace opened last year in a smaller showroom on Cass Avenue in Midtown and closed June 9.

The company website talks about the chain's operators, Shannon and JJ Wilson, a mother and stepson team. There's a tie here to lululemon, the popular yoga and athletic apparel company.

Shannon is married to JJ’s father, Chip Wilson, the founder of lululemon. During their time spent travelling abroad and living internationally, JJ and Shannon recognized a void in the luxury apparel industry. After spending years dressed head to toe in stretchy performance wear, they were looking for clothing that offered the same functionality but that met their desire for sophistication, style and luxury. Since they couldn’t find what they were looking for, they created it.
