How many more hotel rooms can downtown Detroit handle?

Sherri Welch of Crain's Detroit Business reports that six projects are in development that could bring roughly 970 more rooms to the downtown market over the next few years.

Experts tell Crain's that there's a demand for  800 to 1,000 more rooms downtown in the next two to three years.

But there's concern there could end up being too many.

Crain's writes:

But a second tower on the Crowne Plaza Pontchartrain that's being considered could tip that to over 1,370 rooms, above the 800-1,000 rooms experts believe the downtown can support over the next few years.

Last week, Shinola and Dan Gilbert's Bedrock announced plans for a boutique hotel, Shinola Hotel, which will have about 130 rooms. That's expected to open in fall of 2018. (See rendering of hotel above).
